In Wood Species, Floors

Bowdichia spp., Leguminosae - Diplotropis spp., Leguminosae
Other names:
Cutiúba, macanaíba, macanaíba-pele-de-sapo, sapupira, sapupira-da-mata, sapupira-parda, sebepira, sucupira-açu, sucupira-da-terra-firme, sucupira-da-várzea, sucupira-do-igapó, sucupira-marreta, sucupira-parda, sucupira and sucupira-roxa.
General features:
Heartwood and sapwood indistinct by color, dark-brownish-brown; fibrous aspect; brightness absent; imperceptible smell and taste; high density; hard to cut; irregular grain; thick texture.
Durability and Treatment:
Natural durability: sucupira-preta wood, in laboratory tests, has been resistant to attack by xylophagous organisms (fungi and termites). The species is considered resistant to termites and susceptible to attack by marine pin hole. The sapwood is not resistant to attack by wood pin hole. In the field trial, the wood in contact with the soil presented a life exceeding 15 years. Treatability: In laboratory tests, when subjected to pressure impregnation, sucupira-preta wood has been shown to be poorly permeable to preservative solutions. The sapwood is easy to preserve and the core is impervious to creosote and CCA-A, even under pressure treatment.
Processing Characteristics:
Workability: sucupira-preta wood is moderate to difficult to work. It is difficult to be flatten, due to the grain in hand. Easy to turn with good finish. High screw retention capacity, pre-drilling of brads is recommended. Drying: Air-drying is moderate difficult and it presents defects with cracks and warps, which can be aggravated under drastic conditions. Drying in oven is very fast and with few defects, depending on the program used.
